A strong technology and compelling clinical proposition can open the door for a MedTech company. But getting through that door and all the way to an investment, international expansion or acquisition often depends on what happens after the pitch.

That is the focus of an invite-only luncheon taking place during MedTech World Asia 2026 | Hong Kong on Thursday, 27 August, bringing together an investor and experts in cybersecurity, regulatory strategy, quality and clinical readiness for a candid conversation about what happens when a promising MedTech company enters the diligence process.

Titled “From Due Diligence to Deal Ready: What Investors and Acquirers See Before They Say Yes,” the luncheon will take place from 1 to 2 pm at Chancellor Room 3, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The session is powered by Blue Goat Cyber and CS Lifesciences.

At the centre of the discussion is a question many founders encounter too late: What makes a MedTech company genuinely ready for scrutiny from investors and strategic buyers?

Beyond the pitch deck

For investors, the initial pitch is only the beginning.

A company may have an impressive product, strong clinical potential and an attractive market opportunity, but those strengths can quickly come under closer examination once due diligence begins. Questions around regulatory strategy, quality systems, cybersecurity, clinical evidence, intellectual property, operations and international market readiness can all influence how an investor or acquirer views the opportunity.

Leading the investor perspective will be Chris Japp, Partner at Tramway Ventures, who brings more than 35 years of global experience in MedTech, including senior leadership positions at multinational companies and multiple board roles. At Tramway Ventures, a New Mexico-based VC focused on MedTech, biotech and health tech investments in the southwest, Chris works closely with early-stage companies and brings a practical understanding of what can build or erode investor confidence.

The conversation will be moderated by Joseph Chi Hou Ho, Programme Director at HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy, who brings 30 years of experience across Asia, including a decade living and working in Shanghai. His deep regional expertise, combined with a strong focus on innovation and entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), will bring valuable local context to the discussion.

Where promising companies can encounter problems

Diligence can uncover issues that are not immediately visible from a pitch deck or financial model.

A regulatory clearance, for example, does not necessarily mean that a company has everything in place for international expansion or acquisition. Investors and buyers may want to understand whether the company’s quality systems can support growth, whether its clinical evidence meets the expectations of a new market, and whether its regulatory strategy is aligned with its commercial ambitions.

Cybersecurity is another area receiving increasing attention.

Christian Espinosa, Founder and CEO of Blue Goat Cyber, will bring his perspective on medical device cybersecurity, product security and technical diligence. With more than 30 years of experience, Christian works with manufacturers on FDA, EU MDR and international compliance while addressing cybersecurity risks that can affect both patient safety and commercial viability.

For founders, these issues can become particularly important when a cybersecurity weakness is discovered late in a transaction. Addressing it may require additional time, resources and technical work, potentially affecting deal timelines or terms.

Deal readiness starts earlier than many founders think

The discussion will also explore when companies should begin preparing for investor and strategic-buyer scrutiny.

Edwin Lindsay, Managing Director and Principal Consultant of Compliance Solutions (Life Sciences) Ltd, Director and Co-Founder of RAF Solutions Inc and Director and Co-Founder of Sure Retractors Inc, brings more than 20 years of experience across regulatory and clinical affairs, quality assurance, operations and product development.

Having supported more than 100 startups, as well as SMEs and multinational organisations, Edwin has seen first-hand how regulatory and quality decisions made early in a company’s development can influence its ability to reach the market and scale.

He is also an active angel investor with a portfolio spanning numerous MedTech startups, giving him insight from both the operational and investment sides of the table.

Together, Edwin and Christian will examine the areas founders should address before diligence begins, rather than waiting for an investor or acquirer to identify the gaps.

What does “deal ready” actually mean?

For the speakers, being deal ready is not simply about having the right documents prepared when an investor comes calling.

It means having the fundamentals in place to withstand scrutiny.

The luncheon will explore what investors examine beyond the pitch deck and financial model, the regulatory, quality, clinical and cybersecurity weaknesses most frequently uncovered during diligence, and which issues can influence valuation, deal terms or timelines.

The discussion will also consider the warning signs that can delay investment, partnerships, market entry or acquisition, and how founders can identify and address those issues earlier.

Ultimately, the session will offer a practical view of what a genuinely deal-ready MedTech company looks like from three different perspectives: the investor, the regulatory and quality expert, and the cybersecurity specialist.

For founders and executives preparing for their next financing round, international expansion or strategic transaction, that perspective can be valuable long before the first formal diligence request arrives.
