Artificial intelligence has become one of the most debated topics in healthcare today; at once promising improved efficiency and outcomes, while raising questions about ethics, access, and the role of physicians in a technology-driven future. These themes took center stage in a recent episode of Physicianary, the podcast hosted by Dr. Hansa Bhargava and produced by Healio, which brings innovation, inspiration, and actionable insights to clinicians worldwide.

In this episode, “The Great AI Debate: Global Innovators Discuss the Doctor’s Role in a Technology-Driven Future,” Dr. Dylan Attard, CEO and Co-founder of MedTech World, joined fellow physician-innovators Dr. Keith Grimes (UK) and Dr. Muhammad Mamdani (Canada) for a wide-ranging conversation on AI, doctorpreneurship, and the ethics of innovation.

Doctors as entrepreneurs in a digital age

When asked about the rise of “doctorpreneurs,” Dr. Dylan offered a candid perspective shaped by his own journey from surgery into entrepreneurship.

“Life kind of starts outside your comfort zone,” he reflected, recalling the moment he stepped away from surgical training to co-found MedTech World.

“Many doctors know a problem they want to solve from their daily practice, but building a solution requires more than medical insight. It’s about forming the right teams, understanding your own strengths and weaknesses, and being prepared for the challenges of the entrepreneurial world.”

Dr. Dylan emphasized that while many physicians are eager to tackle the inefficiencies they witness in hospitals, the real test lies in translating ideas into viable products that can survive in the competitive, fast-paced startup ecosystem.

Guardrails and ethics in AI

Dr. Keith Grimes, a veteran in digital health innovation, drew on the four ethical principles guiding medicine—beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and autonomy—to frame how healthcare should approach AI. From clinical validation to data security and equitable access, he underscored the need to apply the same values that govern human decision-making to machine-driven ones.

For Dr. Mamdani, the conversation turned to practical use cases. At Unity Health Toronto, his team has developed AI-powered tools that optimize nurse scheduling and predict patient deterioration—initiatives that have reduced errors, improved efficiency, and even lowered unexpected mortality rates. His message was clear: effective AI isn’t about ego-driven innovation but about solving problems clinicians face daily.

A journey of constant learning

Dr. Dylan was quick to acknowledge that even after five years in entrepreneurship, he is still very much a student.

“I’m just a 30-year-old kid trying to pave his own life,” he said with humility. “Every day is a lesson, and I try to learn not just from those who have succeeded, but also from those who have failed. You can learn something from everyone.”

This openness resonated with his co-panelists, who described entrepreneurship as exhilarating yet unforgiving—a path that demands both fearlessness and the ability to “check your ego at the door.”

Looking ahead

The debate highlighted a shared theme across all three innovators: while AI holds immense promise, its true value will be realised only when grounded in ethics, collaboration, and a relentless focus on patient needs.

For Dr. Dylan, that philosophy is at the core of MedTech World’s mission. From its beginnings as a small conference in Malta, MedTech World has grown into a global ecosystem connecting startups, investors, and healthcare leaders across multiple continents—an embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit he champions.

As healthcare grapples with the rapid pace of technological change, conversations like these are vital reminders that innovation isn’t just about machines. It’s about people—doctors, entrepreneurs, patients—working together to ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around.
