When it comes to managing infectious disease threats, speed, accuracy, and preparedness can make all the difference. Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) has taken a decisive step on all three fronts with the expansion of its Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases (RLID-AD), reinforcing the Emirate’s ability to detect, track, and respond to outbreaks with confidence.

The expanded facility reflects a broader commitment to building resilient public health systems that are ready for both routine surveillance and unexpected health emergencies.

A collaborative effort to build public health readiness

The milestone was marked by an event attended by senior representatives from across Abu Dhabi’s health ecosystem, including leaders from ADPHC, PureHealth, PureLab, and SEHA. The presence of multiple stakeholders highlighted the collaborative approach underpinning the expansion and its role within the wider public health framework.

Located at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and operated by PureLab, part of the PureHealth group, the Reference Laboratory serves as a central pillar in the Emirate’s infectious disease monitoring and response efforts.

From sample to sequencing: Expanding diagnostic capabilities

The upgraded laboratory enhances molecular diagnostics and infectious disease testing across the entire workflow, from sample reception and processing to advanced analysis and genetic sequencing. This expansion significantly increases testing capacity, enabling faster diagnosis and more effective surveillance during epidemic or pandemic situations, while maintaining strict quality and biosafety standards.

By strengthening in-house capabilities, the facility also supports better resource management and evidence-based decision-making across the public health system.

Rapid response in the field with a mobile BSL-3 laboratory

A key highlight of the expansion is the activation of a BSL-3 mobile laboratory trailer. Designed for deployment directly in outbreak areas, the unit allows on-site testing and analysis, reducing response times and supporting swift containment measures.

Built to international standards, the mobile BSL-3 Unit reinforces Abu Dhabi’s laboratory biosafety framework and adds a flexible, high-impact tool to its epidemic preparedness strategy.

Global recognition, local expertise

The Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases is recognised by the World Health Organization as a National Influenza Centre and conducts testing for measles, rubella, and other infectious diseases. Its work places Abu Dhabi within a global network of disease surveillance and reporting.

Equally notable is the laboratory’s workforce, with more than 50 per cent comprising UAE national professionals, reflecting growing local expertise in advanced diagnostics and laboratory science.

The expansion of RLID-AD forms part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term vision to enhance health system resilience and readiness. By investing in advanced diagnostics, biosafety, and skilled professionals, the Emirate continues to strengthen its ability to respond effectively to infectious disease threats, today and in the years ahead.
