Arspectra: Advancing Surgical Precision with Augmented Reality
Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent health challenges, with over 2.8 million surgeries performed annually in Europe alone. As the global market for near-infrared (NIR) imaging is projected to reach €2.51 billion by 2029, driven by a 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), there is an undeniable need for innovation in surgical technology. Arspectra Medical, a MedTech company, is addressing this need by creating advanced augmented reality (AR) glasses and solutions for a wide range of healthcare applications.
In September this year, Arspectra Medical took home the top prize at the MedTech World Startup Pitch Competition during the Luxembourg Roadshow, competing against four other impressive startups. Read on to discover what set Arspectra apart.
Overcoming Critical Challenges in Surgery
Surgeons often face the challenge of having their attention diverted from patients to screens displaying diagnostic data. This constant shift increases the risk of errors and reduces operational efficiency. Arspectra has tackled this issue head-on by developing AR glasses that project crucial diagnostic information directly onto the patient. Instead of relying on screens to locate a tumor, surgeons see the tumor’s precise position in real time, enhancing accuracy and reducing the likelihood of subjective mistakes.
This innovation isn’t just about convenience—it translates into tangible benefits. By integrating AR into the operating room, hospitals can reduce procedural times, cut costs, and, most importantly, improve patient outcomes.
Innovation Driven by Collaboration
Arspectra’s strength lies in its collaborative approach. From the outset, the company has engaged surgeons in the development process, ensuring their solutions address real-world needs. This surgeon-centric methodology has set Arspectra apart, creating tools that resonate with clinical users and enhance surgical performance.
Dr. Cedric Spaas, General Manager of Arspectra Medical, emphasized: “Our mission is to revolutionize how surgeons interact with data during procedures. By integrating augmented reality directly into their field of view, we eliminate unnecessary distractions and reduce errors. We’ve worked closely with surgeons to develop this solution, ensuring it meets their needs and enhances patient care. This collaboration drives every innovation we bring to market.”
Market Expansion and Strategic Vision
Arspectra has already launched two advanced AR solutions, generating revenue and scaling operations across Europe and the United States. The company’s flagship device, focused on lymph nodes and blood perfusion, is particularly relevant for breast cancer surgeries but holds potential for broader applications. With over one million surgeons worldwide who could benefit from this technology, the impact is far-reaching.
Plans include diversifying the technology for other high-incidence cancers and arterial procedures. While initial sales efforts are focused on direct partnerships, Arspectra is expanding through distribution channels in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Promotion efforts leverage key opinion leaders (KOLs)—the surgeons who helped develop the technology—as well as major medical trade fairs.
A Promising Path in AR Navigation
Looking ahead, Arspectra plans to launch its next-generation navigation device in 2025, pending FDA approval. This device promises to set new standards in surgical precision and safety. The company is currently raising €10 million in a Series A funding round to support commercial growth, with a projected break-even point by 2027.
The potential is immense. The fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) market alone is expected to grow to €736 million by 2029, with a remarkable 23.6% CAGR. By combining cutting-edge technology with practical, user-driven design, Arspectra is well-positioned to lead this growth.
Takeaway
Arspectra’s mission is about more than technology—it’s about elevating surgical practice. Their AR solutions provide real-time, accurate information that enhances surgical precision, reduces risks, and improves patient outcomes. In a world where innovation is crucial, Arspectra is not just developing tools for today—it’s setting the standard for surgical excellence.
