Garland Surgical Ltd to take the stage at MedTech World London
MedTech World is thrilled to announce that Simon Mifsud, CEO of Garland Surgical Ltd, will be joining us as pitch competitor at the upcoming MedTech World Roadshow in London on May 29th.
Garland Surgical Ltd are opening opportunities in the market for a total hip prosthesis that could last for longer than current expectations, support healthcare systems to reach their sustainability goals, and most importantly improve the quality of life of patients.
Simon’s rise from startup to success
Simon Mifsud boasts three decades of expertise in the medical device industry, with a focus on various specialties, notably orthopaedics.
His notable accomplishment includes elevating Atlantech Medical Devices Ltd from a humble startup to a thriving enterprise, achieving multi-million-pound success with a staff of over 50 within just 7 years. Subsequently, the cspeakerompany was acquired by US PLC ArthroCare, where Mifsud spearheaded the international division until its acquisition by Smith & Nephew in 2014.
With a blend of startup and corporate experience, he has honed his skills in sales, marketing, operations, and general management, holding pivotal roles at strategic and board levels both domestically and internationally.
Confident in his abilities, Mifsud, along with the Garland team, is poised to introduce the MaltaHip to the market, equipped with the requisite knowledge, expertise, and determination.
Additionally, he has a proven track record in implementing strategic initiatives, encompassing change management, rationalisation, and the expansion of product portfolios and sales channels across diverse sectors.
Mifsud’s expertise extends across orthopaedics, sports medicine, spine, ENT, wound management, and interventional therapies, reflecting his comprehensive understanding and success in these domains. Moreover, his extensive background includes steering diverse businesses across multiple locations worldwide, navigating through mergers, acquisitions, and the dynamic landscape of startup ventures.
Behind Garland Surgical’s success
Garland Surgical Ltd, a burgeoning medical device design and development firm situated in Worcester, United Kingdom, emerged from a collaboration between British entrepreneur Simon Mifsud, Netherlands-based venture builder NLC, and the inventive team from the University of Malta, marking its inception in early 2022.
The name “Garland Surgical” draws inspiration from the yoga pose “Malasana” or “Garland Pose,” known for its deep squat that enhances hip and groin flexibility while strengthening the feet and ankles.
The MaltaHip
Nestled at the forefront of their medical innovation stands the MaltaHip, an exceptional tri-axial hip replacement meticulously engineered to blend strength and durability with unparalleled flexibility, promising patients newfound mobility as they navigate their recovery journey.
This groundbreaking device, conceptualised and constructed in Malta, has garnered attention and support both locally and internationally, securing a substantial UK grant totaling half a million pounds.
Back in 2023, engineer and University of Malta professor Joseph Buhagiar described the arduous process of obtaining a European patent for this biomedical marvel as nothing short of Herculean, underscoring the rarity and significance of this achievement. With only a handful of patents awarded in the university’s history, and even fewer specifically for biomedical devices, the team’s elation was palpable.
Inspired by the resilience of the ankle joint, which bears significant weight yet remains relatively resistant to arthritis compared to knee and hip joints, the researchers embarked on a journey to revolutionise hip osteoarthritis treatment.
In the UK, collaborative efforts between Garland Surgical Ltd and the University of Leeds are driving forward the development of this innovative device.
With rigorous wear-tests demonstrating a projected implant lifespan exceeding 50 years, coupled with minimal risk of dislocation and an impressive track record of endurance, the MaltaHip emerges as a beacon of hope – a hip for life, one step at a time.
