Malta’s First Successful Transsphenoidal Surgery Conducted at Mater Dei Hospital
In a remarkable medical achievement, the Department of Neurosurgery at Mater Dei Hospital has successfully conducted Malta’s first transsphenoidal surgery, marking a significant advancement in the country’s healthcare capabilities.
The surgery was performed on a 27-year-old patient suffering from severe vision impairment. Medical tests revealed a rapid decline in the patient’s sight, prompting an emergency endoscopic operation. The procedure, carried out through the nasal cavity, resulted in an almost immediate restoration of the patient’s vision, highlighting the effectiveness of this advanced technique.
What is Transsphenoidal Surgery?
Transsphenoidal surgery is a type of minimally invasive procedure used to remove tumors or abnormalities located at the base of the brain, typically affecting the pituitary gland. The word “transsphenoidal” refers to the route taken to access this area: through the sphenoid sinus, a hollow space behind the nose. Instead of making large incisions in the skull, surgeons use an endoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera and light—inserted through the nasal cavity, allowing them to operate with precision.
This method greatly reduces recovery time, minimizes scarring, and lowers the risk of complications compared to traditional brain surgery, which requires opening the skull.
A Groundbreaking Achievement for Malta
Minister for Health Jo Etienne Abela praised the milestone, emphasizing that this groundbreaking intervention was made possible through a €700,000 investment in cutting-edge equipment and specialized training for the hospital’s medical team.
The successful surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team, with key contributions from endocrinologists, surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses. Dr. Mark Gruppetta and Dr. Jasmina Djukic led the operation, with their collective expertise playing a vital role in the positive outcome.
This achievement not only marks a breakthrough in neurosurgery for Malta but also opens the door for more patients with similar conditions to receive advanced treatment locally, reducing the need for medical travel abroad.
The successful performance of transsphenoidal surgery at Mater Dei Hospital is a testament to Malta’s growing medical expertise and commitment to embracing innovative healthcare solutions for its citizens.
