Malta’s strategic location and rich heritage make it a perfect hub for MedTech startups, investors, and leaders. Last year, we moved to our new venue, the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, because we wanted our event to embody historical charm with modern conveniences. 

However, while Valletta shines, don’t overlook hidden gems like Birgu and Mdina, each with its own intriguing history.

9. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua)

Across the Grand Harbour from Valletta are the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua.

Each city boasts its own unique charm and centuries-old fortifications, including Fort St. Angelo in Birgu. Positioned at the heart of the Grand Harbour, the bastioned fort boasts a storied past. Initially erected as the Castrum Maris in the mediaeval era, it underwent reconstruction by the Order of Saint John in the 16th century, emerging as Fort Saint Angelo. Renowned for its pivotal role as the Order’s stronghold during the momentous Great Siege of Malta in 1565, it stands as a testament to Malta’s resilient history.

Away from the fort, discover narrow cobblestone streets, bustling waterfronts, and majestic bastions that have witnessed Malta’s storied maritime history, the greatest collection of which can be found at the Malta Maritime Museum, also in Birgu.

8. Blue Grotto

Embark on a boat tour to Blue Grotto, a breathtaking natural wonder renowned for its mesmerising sea caves and vibrant blue waters. Marvel at the interplay of light and shadow as you navigate through the stunning coastal cliffs and rock formations.

7. Marsaxlokk

Immerse yourself in the authentic charm of Marsaxlokk, a picturesque fishing village famed for its colourful boats and lively Sunday fish market. Stroll along the waterfront promenade, sample fresh seafood delicacies, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this traditional Maltese gem.

6. Dingli Cliffs

Stand in awe atop Dingli Cliffs, where rugged limestone cliffs plunge dramatically into the azure expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy panoramic vistas stretching across the horizon, offering a serene retreat from the bustling city life.

5. Popeye Village

Step into the whimsical world of Popeye Village, originally constructed as a film set for the 1980 musical “Popeye.” Wander through the charming seaside village, explore quirky attractions, and relive the magic of this beloved movie amidst stunning coastal scenery.

4. Gozo – Dwejra Bay

Discover the enchanting coastal beauty of Dwejra Bay, once home to the iconic Azure Window before its collapse in 2017. Explore the rugged cliffs, sea stacks, and natural arches sculpted by the relentless forces of nature, offering a glimpse into Malta’s geological past.

3. Gozo – Xlendi Bay

Unwind in the idyllic setting of Xlendi Bay, nestled amidst towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Enjoy leisurely walks along the scenic coastline, bask in the Mediterranean sun on the sandy beach, or embark on a picturesque hike to discover hidden coves and panoramic viewpoints.

2. Gozo – Iċ-Ċittadella

Iċ-Ċittadella, Gozo’s iconic fortified city, boasts a rich history spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. Its imposing skyline and diverse architecture bear witness to the contributions of past inhabitants. 

Beyond its historical and military significance, Ċittadella’s open spaces nurture rare flora and fauna. The site serves as a vibrant venue for cultural events, connecting the island’s past with its future. Visitors step back in time, experiencing a memorable journey through history amidst its ancient walls.

1. Mdina – Malta’s Silent City

Mdina, Malta’s historical nucleus, is a convergence of cultural histories dating back to 700 BC. From Phoenician origins to Roman occupation and Norman fortifications, its evolution reflects diverse cultural influences. 

Despite a Baroque makeover after a 1693 earthquake, Mdina retains its mediaeval charm with narrow streets and iconic landmarks. The “Silent City” prohibits cars, offering tranquillity amid its ancient bastions.

Visiting Game of Thrones fans will easily spot iconic filming sites from 2010 used for the show’s first season. Mdina’s Gate, where Ned and Catelyn bid farewell, and Mesquita Square, where Ned visited Littlefinger’s house of pleasure, served as key locations for King’s Landing scenes. Mdina also featured prominently for generic street scenes, giving modern day visitors a feeling of wandering through a real-life film set.
