UAE Implements Mandatory Genetic Tests for Emiratis Under Premarital Screening Programme

As part of its continuous efforts to safeguard public health and improve the quality of life for future generations, the UAE has introduced a groundbreaking initiative: mandatory genetic testing for citizens planning to marry in the Emirate. Effective from October 1, this new regulation is part of the premarital screening programme overseen by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH).

A Proactive Approach to Preventing Genetic Diseases

The decision to include genetic testing as a prerequisite for marriage reflects the UAE’s commitment to preventive healthcare. Through this initiative, couples will be required to undergo comprehensive genetic screening to identify potential genetic disorders that could be passed on to their children. By focusing on early detection, the UAE is leading the charge in reducing the prevalence of preventable genetic conditions.

Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Centre at DoH, stated that the initiative is designed to prevent genetic diseases and enhance early intervention through various phases, including diagnostics, tailored genetic counselling, and the introduction of reproductive medicine solutions for couples.

Broad Access for Emiratis

This service is accessible to all Emiratis across Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain, with genetic tests being offered in 22 primary care centres. Couples can expect to receive their test results within 14 days, providing timely and crucial information to help them make informed health decisions before marriage.

The genetic screening test covers 570 autosomal recessive genes linked to over 840 genetic disorders. These tests are designed to detect shared genetic mutations that, if present in both partners, could significantly increase the risk of passing on serious hereditary conditions.

Addressing Common Genetic Disorders

Many of the genetic conditions screened for can lead to severe health complications in newborns, including loss of vision and hearing, developmental delays, blood clotting disorders, organ failure, and seizures. Early identification allows couples to consider options such as reproductive medicine, ensuring that their future children are born healthy.

The pilot phase of the initiative, which began in 2022 in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), was instrumental in shaping the programme. During this phase, more than 800 couples were tested, with 86% achieving genetic compatibility. For the remaining 14%, additional interventions and family planning options were introduced based on their genetic results.

A National Push for Preventive Care

By integrating genetic testing into the premarital screening process, the UAE is taking a bold and essential step toward preventing genetic disorders. The initiative aligns with the country’s broader healthcare strategy, which emphasizes preventive care, early intervention, and the promotion of public health.

With this initiative, the UAE reaffirms its dedication to proactive healthcare solutions that protect its citizens and ensure a bright, healthy future for families.
