OrganOx, the Oxford University spinout transforming liver and kidney transplantation, has made headlines with its US$1.5 billion acquisition by Terumo Corporation, marking the largest exit in Oxford’s spinout history and its first ever exceeding £1 billion.

Following this milestone, OrganOx will participate at MedTech Malta 2025, taking place from 12 to 14 November, where more than 2,000 attendees from across the global MedTech community will gather to exchange ideas and foster collaborations.

Professor Constantin Coussios, Founder and Chief Technology Officer at OrganOx, will be among the speakers at the event. In conversation with healthcare journalist Tjasa Zajc, Founder and Host of Faces of Digital Health, Professor Coussios will reflect on his journey in biomedical innovation, from early research at Oxford’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering to building and scaling ventures such as OrganOx, OxSonics, and OrthoSon.

Their discussion will explore how academic breakthroughs can translate into global clinical impact, offering valuable insights for innovators, researchers, and investors attending the event.

Redefining organ preservation

Founded in 2008 by Professor Coussios and transplant surgeon Professor Peter Friend, OrganOx emerged from the collaboration between Oxford’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) and the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences. The company was the first startup created under the partnership between the Department of Engineering Science and Technikos, a specialist medical technology venture capital fund that has since supported more than 30 companies.

At the heart of OrganOx’s success is its Normothermic Machine Perfusion (NMP) technology, which keeps donor organs functioning outside the body by circulating warm, oxygenated, blood-like fluid. This allows clinicians to assess organ viability in real time, extend preservation times, and improve transplant outcomes. To date, OrganOx’s systems have supported more than 7,500 transplants worldwide, expanding access to viable organs and reducing the need for emergency surgeries.

A strategic partnership for global impact

The acquisition builds upon a long-standing collaboration between OrganOx and Terumo, which began with joint development of the metra® device. Terumo’s strategic investment through Terumo Ventures in early 2025 paved the way for this milestone transaction, expected to accelerate global adoption of OrganOx’s technology and enhance its clinical and economic reach.

At close to £1.2 billion, the deal reinforces the University of Oxford’s position among the world’s leading ecosystems for translating academic excellence into real-world healthcare innovation.

Looking ahead to Malta
