On Day 1 of MedTech Malta 2025, the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) will bring together scientists, clinicians, policymakers, and innovators for an insightful workshop titled “Co-Creating Malta’s Cancer Innovation Ecosystem: Pathways to Research, Technology, and Trials.” The session, taking place on 13 November at Vassalli Hall, Mediterranean Conference Centre, aims to chart a collective vision for how Malta can strengthen its position as an international pioneer in cancer research and innovation.
On the importance of collaboration and Malta’s commitment to advancing cancer research, Prof. Christian Scerri, Chair, CRIHM, said, “Collaboration is at the heart of Malta’s vision for cancer research and innovation. By bringing together scientists, clinicians, policymakers, and innovators, we are building an ecosystem that transforms ideas into impact and contributing meaningfully to Europe’s mission to defeat cancer.”

The workshop will explore the latest breakthroughs in precision oncology, AI-driven diagnostics, and novel therapies emerging from Maltese-led collaborations. Participants will engage in open dialogue to identify the country’s unique strengths and challenges, shaping strategies to advance translational research, data-sharing frameworks, and clinical trial readiness. It will also serve as a platform to align national efforts with Europe’s broader Cancer Mission and the National Research and Innovation Strategy 2023–2027, reinforcing Malta’s growing role in global cancer innovation.
The session will open with a welcome address by Prof. Christian Scerri, outlining Malta’s vision for advancing cancer innovation through collaboration. Short presentations will then set the policy and research context, followed by “lightning inspiration” talks from researchers and startup leaders offering practical insights from the field.
A major highlight of the workshop will be its interactive breakout discussions, where participants will exchange ideas across four key themes: Research & Infrastructure, Clinical Trials & Regulation, Digital Health & Data, and Patient Engagement & Awareness. Each group will present its key takeaways, contributing to a synthesis of insights and actionable priorities for Malta’s cancer ecosystem. The session will conclude with a summary of these “Malta Takeaways,” outlining practical next steps to be shared during the panel discussions later in the conference.
Through this collaborative effort, the Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta seeks to strengthen connections between science, technology, and clinical practice. The workshop promises to be a cornerstone moment for advancing Malta’s role in cancer innovation, uniting expertise and ambition to translate research excellence into real-world impact.
