Emirates Health Services Leverages AI to Improve TB Detection

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most lethal infectious diseases worldwide. According to WHO, in 2023 alone, 1.25 million people lost their lives to TB, including 161,000 individuals living with HIV. After temporarily being overshadowed by COVID-19, TB has once again become the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Present in all countries and affecting all age groups, TB is both preventable and curable, yet its impact persists, particularly where early detection is delayed.

The fight against TB hinges on speed and accuracy in diagnosis. The earlier the disease is identified, the sooner treatment can begin, reducing the likelihood of complications and preventing its spread. Recognizing this critical need, Emirates Health Services (EHS) has embraced artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize TB screening in its Medical Examination Centers for Residency, marking a transformative leap in digital healthcare.

How AI is Reshaping TB Detection

EHS’s AI-powered system scans chest X-rays with remarkable precision, detecting pulmonary TB at an unprecedented accuracy rate. Traditionally, TB detection had an 80% accuracy rate. With AI, this has surged to an astonishing 98%. Even more striking is the speed at which the AI processes imaging—under a minute—significantly reducing the time required for radiologists to finalize reports. This efficiency ensures faster diagnosis, quicker treatment initiation, and ultimately, better patient outcomes.

But the impact extends beyond numbers. AI is reshaping the workflow for healthcare professionals. By automating routine screenings, radiologists can now focus on more complex cases, enhancing their ability to deliver high-quality care. Moreover, this advancement positions the UAE at the forefront of digital health innovation, reinforcing its commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable healthcare solutions.

Pioneering the Future of AI in Healthcare

AI in radiology goes beyond speed and accuracy, contributing to a more streamlined and accessible healthcare system. The success of EHS’s AI-driven TB detection is a testament to the potential of AI in medical diagnostics. A prime example of this next-generation innovation is Neo Q, which is transforming radiological workflows. This groundbreaking AI-driven platform was recently honored with the Best Use of AI in Healthcare Award at MedTech World Dubai 2025, further cementing the role of AI in redefining modern healthcare practices.
