As global healthcare innovation accelerates, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region is rapidly emerging as a key destination for MedTech growth, investment, and collaboration. At the upcoming MedTech Malta 2025, Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Senior Vice President of Dubai Science Park, Dubai International Academic City, and Dubai Knowledge Park, at TECOM Group PJSC, will join the panel “Gateway to the Middle East: MedTech Opportunities in the GCC.” Ahead of the event, MedTech World caught up with him to discuss Dubai’s evolving MedTech landscape, the role of Dubai Science Park in supporting global innovators, and how events like MedTech Malta help bridge international partnerships.

Connecting global minds for MedTech growth

For Marwan, the most exciting part of participating in MedTech Malta 2025 lies in the opportunity to connect with the world’s most forward-thinking healthcare leaders.

“I look forward to engaging with key thought leaders, decision-makers and innovators across the international MedTech ecosystem, which demonstrates significant promise to deliver global healthcare enhancements,” he said.

“MedTech Malta 2025 provides access to new insights, partnerships and innovation, and I am keen to showcase how Dubai Science Park can provide businesses and investors a gateway to expand into new markets.”

Dubai Science Park, one of TECOM Group PJSC’s ten business districts, is the Middle East’s leading science-focused ecosystem, driving collaboration among healthcare, pharmaceutical, and life sciences players across the region.

The GCC: A market ripe with opportunity

The GCC is increasingly viewed as a high-potential region for MedTech expansion. Marwan emphasised that Dubai’s thriving innovation ecosystem, coupled with strong government initiatives, is creating fertile ground for global players.

“Dubai is a vital market for international MedTech businesses looking to expand their footprint, and an influx of talent, paired with robust government support and frameworks to accelerate R&D, start-ups, and innovation, are paving the way for such growth.”

Home to over 500 healthcare and life sciences companies and more than 6,500 professionals, Dubai Science Park has become a hub for advancing healthcare innovation. The district has observed a growing focus on digital technologies that can enhance care delivery and patient outcomes, a key area of opportunity for both regional and international investors.

Bridging Europe and the Middle East

MedTech Malta serves as a global meeting point for healthcare innovators, and Marwan says such events help to forge partnerships that transcend borders.

“Collaboration is pivotal to innovation in this fast-moving sector, and such events enable businesses to connect with potential investors and partners across global markets,” he shared.

“I’m proud to be representing Dubai Science Park at the event to further extend the support, infrastructure, and networking opportunities that accelerate the success of global healthcare and MedTech firms from our district.”

Why Dubai? Strategic location meets visionary policy

Dubai’s unique advantages position it as a launchpad for MedTech innovators looking to access markets across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

“Dubai’s strategic location at an eight-hour flight’s distance from two-thirds of the global population and its pro-business legislation make it an ideal place for entrepreneurs to establish and grow their ventures.”

He highlighted strategies and initiatives such as We the UAE 2031, the Dubai Research and Development Programme, and the Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’, which collectively foster an innovation-driven economy and support science and healthcare advancement. These frameworks encourage investment in cutting-edge technologies while nurturing homegrown start-ups.

Empowering innovators through TECOM Group’s ecosystem

Part of TECOM Group PJSC, Dubai Science Park has built a thriving environment where global MedTech leaders and start-ups collaborate side by side. The district is home to international companies such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and BeiGene, and features modern Grade-A offices as well as LEED-certified laboratory spaces designed to fuel scientific progress.

“Himalaya, Firmenich, and Jotun operate R&D centres in our district, supporting the UAE’s drive for homegrown innovation with global impact,” Marwan noted.

In addition, in5 Science, part of TECOM Group’s in5 start-up incubator, provides tailored support to science and healthcare entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 2013, in5 has nurtured more than 1,100 start-ups that collectively raised over USD 2.4 billion in funding, demonstrating Dubai’s ability to convert ideas into thriving ventures.

The future: Data, AI, and personalised medicine

Looking ahead, Marwan sees artificial intelligence (AI), personalised medicine, and wearable technology as transformative forces in healthcare. AI, in particular, will be instrumental in early disease detection and precision treatment.

“AI holds great potential for the early detection of diseases and can significantly contribute to personalised medicine by leveraging vast amounts of data analytics.”

He also referenced “The UAE Healthcare Ecosystem” white paper, developed by Dubai Science Park in collaboration with EY, which underscores the value of harnessing healthcare data, accounting for nearly 30% of all global data generated, to create more accessible and effective healthcare solutions.

At Dubai Science Park, initiatives such as the DSP Leadership Network Forum bring together industry stakeholders to exchange insights and collaborate, reinforcing Dubai’s status as a global hub for science, MedTech, and healthcare innovation.
