On the Mic and on the Map: Dr. Dylan Attard Talks MedTech in Hong Kong

As MedTech World prepares for its upcoming roadshow in Hong Kong, the event has already caught the attention of regional media and stakeholders. In a recent interview with RTHK Podcast One, Dr. Dylan Attard, CEO of MedTech World, spoke about the organisation’s global mission, the growing importance of healthcare investment, and why Hong Kong has become a key focus in 2025.

“Six years ago, I took a break from surgery and I founded MedTech World, which back then was meant to be simply an annual conference promoting Malta’s potential as a hub for MedTech and HealthTech,” said Dr. Attard. “Since then, we’ve obviously grown. We’ve realised that the industry is far bigger than we thought.”

That realisation has led to a series of international events hosted across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and most recently Singapore. Now, as the organisation continues expanding in Asia, Hong Kong is next on the map.

Why Hong Kong?

The Hong Kong Roadshow, taking place at the end of June, is being organised in collaboration with NovaX, a regional platform that connects startups and investors. MedTech World is leading the HealthTech and MedTech content within the broader event.

“We’re very excited to be coming to Hong Kong. I’ve heard very good things… especially about the innovation coming out of the investments and the appetite to invest and innovate within healthcare,” said Dr. Attard. “What we’re looking to achieve in our event in Hong Kong is to befriend anyone who’s based in Hong Kong, getting to know what they’re up to when it comes to the MedTech and HealthTech industry, as well as help our existing ecosystem explore Hong Kong as a potential for them.”

He also emphasised the roadshow’s role in facilitating cross-border collaboration:

“We’re quite keen to explore the investment scene in Hong Kong… We come across many innovations across the globe that might be a good potential fit for investors who are based in Hong Kong—who would want to invest not just their capital, but even possibly try to encourage these innovations to deploy their solutions in Hong Kong and Asia.”

On the Rise: Robotics and AI in Healthcare

Dr. Attard also addressed some of the most promising trends shaping global medtech, with particular emphasis on the role of robotics and artificial intelligence.

“Something that quite fascinates me is robotics in surgery. And I think even when it comes to the next couple of years, robotics, not just in surgery but in healthcare in general, is going to take over when it comes to investments,” he explained.

He noted that as healthcare systems continue to face staff shortages and rising patient demand, technological solutions are becoming more vital than ever:

“Healthcare is suffering from a shortage of practitioners. And the current workforce is also super exhausted and tired… If we’re able to start amplifying robotics, and even more so now AI, be it in radiology, be it in telemedicine, it’s going to help our current workforce to achieve their diagnoses and treat patients quicker and easier.”

A Broader Vision for Asia

This won’t be MedTech World’s only stop in Asia. The team is actively looking to identify a long-term base for a flagship conference in the region, and Hong Kong is in the running.

“We’re looking for a home in Asia,” said Dr. Attard. “So far, we’ve done Singapore last September and we’re going to be doing Hong Kong at the end of this month. Hopefully, we’re going to enjoy our experience so much in Hong Kong that in 2026, we’ll be able to choose Hong Kong as our preferred destination to host a flagship MedTech World conference in Asia.”

Beyond the event, Dr. Attard plans to spend time exploring the city, building relationships, and learning from local stakeholders:

“I’m actually quite excited to just simply act as a tourist in Hong Kong, to understand more about the ecosystem, how the city operates, meet more people from there, and speak on a one-to-one basis, not just about healthcare, but about everything.”

Looking Ahead: MedTech Malta 2025

While attention is currently on Hong Kong, Dr. Attard also mentioned MedTech World’s annual flagship gathering, which will return to Malta from 12 to 14 November 2025.

“Most notably, MedTech Malta—which is our main flagship conference of the year—we welcome over 3,000 people from across the globe,” he said. “I’ll be hoping that we’ll be having more and more people from Asia, especially from Hong Kong, joining us in Malta for this global celebration of MedTech and HealthTech entrepreneurship.”
