At MedTech Malta 2024, the Maltese government’s commitment to advancing healthcare and innovation was underscored by keynotes from prominent ministers, Hon. Dr. Jo-Etienne Abela, Minister for Health & Active Ageing, and Hon. Silvio Schembri, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects. Addressing Malta’s Healthcare Challenges and Priorities

In his keynote address, Hon. Dr. Jo-Etienne Abela outlined the unique healthcare challenges Malta faces. With a steadily aging population—approximately 25% of Maltese citizens are over the age of 60—Dr. Abela underscored the need to adapt healthcare resources to address age-related comorbidities and rising care demands. He highlighted how climate change further exacerbates health risks, placing pressure on Malta’s healthcare infrastructure to remain resilient amid evolving challenges.

Dr. Abela emphasized the critical role of preventive care as the “foremost pillar of healthcare in the future.” He cited recent data indicating that every euro invested in preventive care could save between 20-25 euros in treatment costs, far exceeding previous estimates. “While we embrace digital advancements, such as electronic patient records, e-prescriptions, and digital procurement processes, we must make sure that these technologies guarantee continuity of care and supply security,” Dr. Abela stated. He further highlighted Malta’s plans to incorporate telemedicine in emergency care and utilize drones for healthcare product delivery, marking Malta’s progressive steps towards an integrated and modernized healthcare system.

Hon. Silvio Schembri’s keynote, delivered via video, focused on Malta’s position within the MedTech industry and the strategic initiatives shaping its future.
