Varian are delivering life-saving thrombectomies worldwide

“Only a small percentage of eligible patients receive thrombectomy for peripheral vascular use today. We are poised to deliver this life-saving treatment to patients worldwide.”

– Dr. Sanjay Shrivastava, Chief Executive Officer, Innova Vascular

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a silent threat for many individuals, where the hidden risk of clots forms deep within veins. This often unnoticed condition can severely impact daily life, creating a widespread yet frequently unheard desire for hope and healing around the world. Enter Varian, who hand-in-hand with Innova Vascular are determined to do something about this.

Varian, side by side with Innova Vascular, are determined to make a difference and save countless lives.

Varian and Innova: Beating back VTE

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious condition where blood clots form in deep veins. In the U.S. alone, there are about 600,000 cases each year—a 100,000 of which lead to a premature death due to VTE complications. Cancer patients are more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to a dangerous pulmonary embolism (PE). Even if not fatal, DVT and PE can greatly affect a person’s quality of life.

Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, is on the frontier with Innova Vascular, Inc., a medical device firm that creates innovative, minimally invasive treatments for vascular diseases. Their Laguna Thrombectomy System targets venous thromboembolism (VTE). Announced in May, this partnership aims to improve the delivery of treatments for VTE.

The Laguna Thrombectomy System includes the Malibu Aspiration Catheter and the Laguna Clot Retriever, designed for effective clot removal in tough cases. Its easy setup allows doctors to navigate complex anatomy confidently. With great flexibility, trackability, and various sizes, it can treat a wide range of patients and clot types.

The innovative tech represents a major advancement in treating venous thromboembolism. Its adaptable aspiration catheter and clot retriever, along with an intuitive design, allow medical professionals of varying expertise to efficiently remove clots in critical patients. In fact, it has received acclaim from Dr. John Moriarty, Professor of Interventional Radiology and Cardiology and Vice Chair of Clinical Research at UCLA.

Dr. Sanjay Shrivastava, CEO of Innova Vascular, expressed his satisfaction to MedTech World in partnering with Varian Medical Systems to introduce their products to the market.

“Only a small percentage of the eligible patients receive the thrombectomy treatment for peripheral vascular use today. With its commitment to making a lasting impact on healthcare outcomes and advancing therapies, Varian is well positioned to bring this treatment to peripheral vascular thromboembolism patients around the world.”

Commenting on the collaboration with Innova Vascular, Frank Facchini, MD, FSIR, President of Varian Interventional Solutions, told PR Newswire:

“Varian’s collaboration with Innova Vascular expands options for VTE management, addressing a rapidly growing patient population in need of treatment and strengthens our ability to provide a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment solution to the cancer patient.”

Facchini elaborated on how in collaboration with Siemens Healthineers, the company will be integrating cutting-edge imaging with innovative interventional therapies to transform patient care. He emphasised that it marks an exhilarating advancement in the companies’ shared dedication to significantly improving healthcare outcomes and pushing forward therapeutic advancements.

Dr. Bulent Arslan, Chair of the Vascular and Interventional Service Lines at Rush University Medical Center, presented the ‘Early Clinical Experience of the Laguna Thrombectomy System’ at the Global Embolization Symposium and Technology (GEST 2024) in New York on May 17th.

The Malibu Aspiration System and Laguna Clot Retriever System obtained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance in June 2023.
