CRIHM recognised as a European Cancer Mission Hub at MedTech Malta 2025

On Day 2 of MedTech Malta 2025, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted Malta’s growing position as a global platform for healthcare innovation. He emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening collaboration between policymakers, academia, and industry, an approach that helps promising scientific ideas progress more quickly into real-world medical solutions. This backdrop set the stage for a major national announcement. 

The Cancer Research and Innovation Hub Malta (CRIHM) has been officially recognised as a European Cancer Mission Hub, reinforcing Malta’s role within Europe’s coordinated effort to advance cancer research, technology development, and cross-border cooperation. 

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre and addressed by Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti as part of the MedTech Malta 2025 programme. 

In his remarks, the Parliamentary Secretary commended the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between CRIHM and MedTech World.

He stated, “It is our mission as a government to ensure positive collaborations between the public and private sectors. Partnerships of this sort can result in fruitful achievements for the benefit of the public in general, particularly in cancer research. MedTech is an internationally renowned organisation with vast capacity and expertise that can help this newly founded foundation continue its growth both locally and internationally.”

He added that this partnership will enhance Malta’s ability to develop high-impact research networks, enabling local researchers to scale their projects through new international collaborations. 

New funding opportunities and EU projects announced 

Dr Dylan Attard, CEO of MedTech World, opened the conference by emphasising the importance of the collaboration between MedTech World and CRIHM.

“The collaboration between MedTech World and the Malta Cancer Research and Innovation Hub (CRIHM) marks an important step in positioning Malta as a global centre for scientific and technological excellence. Through MedTech World’s international platform and CRIHM’s scientific expertise, we are accelerating innovation in cancer care by bridging research with real-world application.”

“This initiative, supported by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Research and Innovation and the Cancer Research Foundation, reflects our national commitment to empowering researchers, embracing technology, and fostering cross-border collaboration, while strengthening Malta’s leadership in European healthcare innovation,” Dr Attard added.

Prof Christian Scerri, Chair, CRIHM, addressed the audience on CRIHM’s newly confirmed role as a European Cancer Mission Hub, noting that this recognition will allow Malta to take on a stronger role in EU-wide cancer initiatives. He also announced the launch of two new funding schemes aimed at supporting scientific excellence in oncology research: 

  • CRIHM Young Investigator Award, supporting emerging researchers pursuing cancer-related studies. 
  • CRIHM Open Access Publication Reimbursement Scheme, enabling researchers to share their findings more widely by covering publication costs. 

Prof Scerri also presented an overview of CRIHM’s newly awarded EU-funded projects, explaining how these initiatives will accelerate advancements in cancer research and technology. He outlined the foundation’s latest applications for EU funding, highlighting a continued commitment to securing sustainable support for cutting-edge research.

Strengthening Malta’s role in Europe’s fight against cancer 

With these milestones, CRIHM advances its mission to support cancer research, promote innovation, and foster strong collaborative networks. Its growing contributions position Malta as an active and credible partner within Europe’s collective effort to improve cancer care and outcomes.
