Day 1 of MedTech Malta 2025 opened with enthusiasm and a strong show of support from the Government of Malta. With keynote addresses from senior leaders and their active participation throughout the day, the message was clear: Malta is deeply invested in advancing healthcare innovation through collaboration, digital transformation, and sustainable growth.

Prime Minister Robert Abela: Malta’s future lies at the crossroads of science, technology, and humanity

Hon. Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta, delivered an inspiring address, congratulating Dr. Dylan Attard, CEO of MedTech World, for transforming a local startup vision into a global community of innovators.

He described Dr. Attard’s journey as “a testament to what Maltese talent and perseverance are all about,” celebrating the success of MedTech World as both a homegrown achievement and a global platform.

Reflecting on Malta Vision 2050, the Prime Minister spoke about the country’s long-term commitment to positioning itself as a hub for MedTech and life sciences innovation.

“As government, we are fully committed to enabling this transformation,” he said.

“We continue to invest in research, clinical innovation, and digital infrastructure, providing the foundation for sustainable growth. We have introduced targeted incentives and support frameworks that empower startups, scaleups and investors to thrive in Malta. True innovation flourishes when government, academia, industry and healthcare providers work together in a single collaborative ecosystem.”

Minister Silvio Schembri: Malta is not on the sideline, we’re leading the change

In his keynote, Hon. Silvio Schembri, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, highlighted Malta’s deliberate and forward-looking approach to fostering innovation and economic growth.

“Today’s gathering reflects something important, that the lines between businesses, healthcare and technology are no longer separated,” said Hon. Schembri.

“Here in Malta, we are not standing on the sideline of the change, we are a part of it and determined to stay at the forefront. And this is what Malta Vision 2050 is all about: it is looking beyond the present and working together to build a future where innovation strengthens our economy, opportunities open to everyone, and progress is powered by our people.”

He emphasized how Malta’s early investments in digital skills, infrastructure, and connectivity are now paying off, not only in productivity but also in the creation of new, high-value industries and careers.

Following the keynotes, Hon. Robert Abela and Hon. Silvio Schembri toured the exhibition floor alongside other government officials, engaging directly with innovators and exhibitors who are contributing to the country’s growing MedTech ecosystem.

Minister Jo-Etienne Abela: Innovation must remain human

Hon. Dr. Jo-Etienne Abela, Minister for Health & Active Ageing, addressed the audience through a video message, reminding attendees that technological advancement must never come at the expense of compassion and accessibility.

“Excellence in delivering care cannot come without the human touch, without that unique human perspective,” he said. “What good is a wonderful digital health app when the person who may benefit most is an elderly person with no access to a smartphone? What good is the most advanced bionic chip prosthesis if its cost outstrips the budget of an entire rehab facility?”

A united front for MedTech growth

Government engagement will continue into Day 2 of MedTech Malta 2025, with participation from Hon. Dr. Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health; Hon. Dr. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Ministry for Education, Sports, Youth, Research and Innovation; and Hon. Dr. Alex Borg, Leader of the Opposition Nationalist Party.

As the conference continues, one thing is certain: Malta’s government is not merely supporting the MedTech sector; it is actively shaping the policies, ecosystem, and collaborations that will define its future.
