Garland Surgical Secures Up to €1.4M in Grant Funding from Malta Enterprise
Malta Enterprise, the economic development agency of Malta, has approved up to €1.4 million in grant funding to support Garland Surgical in its research and development efforts for the MaltaHip project. The funding will assist in preparing the innovative hip replacement for regulatory approval and market launch. In addition, laboratory space at the Malta Life Sciences Park has been allocated to facilitate Garland Surgical’s operations in Malta.
Garland Surgical has been an active participant in MedTech World’s events, showcasing its innovations at the London roadshow in 2024 and the flagship MedTech Malta 2023 & 2024 events. These platforms provided valuable exposure and networking opportunities within the global MedTech community, further positioning the company as an emerging player in the orthopedic technology space.

The MaltaHip implant replaces the standard ball-in-socket with a unique triaxial approach to hip replacement, thereby employing core engineering principles to enhance performance. Firstly, it reduces contact stresses at the articulating surfaces, and secondly it eliminates cross-shear wear in the polyethylene components. In addition, the implant features a unique interlocking mechanism that secures its components and hence reduces the risk of dislocation.
Simon Mifsud, CEO of Garland Surgical, expressed the significance of the funding: “This news is both well-timed and transformational for Garland Surgical Ltd. We are raising our second investment round to complete the product development and begin the work required to initiate our regulatory applications in the EU and USA. This support from Malta Enterprise underpins the innovative and game-changing potential that the MaltaHip brings to the global orthopaedic ecosystem and will allow us to further expand our presence in Malta through our subsidiary Garland Surgical Malta Ltd.”
Malta Enterprise’s grant is not only a financial boost for Garland Surgical but also a testament to Malta’s commitment to advancing the life sciences sector. As the national contact point for the Enterprise Europe Network, Malta offers companies like Garland Surgical a platform to connect with partners in over 60 countries, creating broader opportunities for collaboration once the MaltaHip gains market approval.
With this funding and strategic support, Garland Surgical is poised to bring its ultra-low-wear, whole-life total hip replacement to market, offering a critical solution for patients of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.
