Government Visionaries Lead the Way at MedTech Malta 2024
Did you know that more than 12% of participants at MedTech Malta 2024 came from government and NGOs? The two-day event brought together key voices in healthcare policy, technology, and innovation through panel discussions, keynote addresses, technology showcases, startup pitch competitions, and an awards gala celebrating excellence in healthcare.
Day 1: Tackling Healthcare Challenges with Vision and Technology
Prof. Anthony Serracino Inglott, CEO of the Malta Medicines Authority, welcomed the audience on behalf of the Malta Medicines Authority.
Adapting Healthcare for an Aging Population
Hon. Dr. Jo-Etienne Abela, Minister for Health & Active Ageing, delivered a keynote addressing the dual challenges of aging populations and climate-related health risks. He emphasized the value of preventive care as a long-term cost saver and outlined Malta’s commitment to technologies like AI, telemedicine, and electronic patient records. While highlighting the benefits of digital tools, Dr. Abela stressed the importance of ensuring accessibility and equity to avoid a “digital divide” that could disadvantage vulnerable groups.
Building a Startup Ecosystem with Global Reach
Wayne Grixti, Chairperson of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), shared insights into Malta’s efforts to create a supportive environment for startups through initiatives like DiHubMT, which offers mentorship, funding, and international connections. He highlighted the contributions of organizations such as Tech.mt, Malta Venture Capital, and Xjenza Malta, which streamline the journey from concept to scalable solutions in MedTech, AI, and other sectors. He believes that a united approach will ensure today’s entrepreneurs can inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
Positioning Malta as a MedTech Leader
Hon. Silvio Schembri, Minister for the Economy, Enterprise, and Strategic Projects, emphasized the importance of collaboration among healthcare, academia, and industry through projects like the Malta Life Sciences Park. He also announced a €30 million investment in healthcare infrastructure, aligning with Malta Vision 2050, a plan aimed at advancing innovation, sustainability, and quality of life. Minister Schembri called MedTech Malta 2024 “a vital platform for connecting local and international stakeholders,” inviting global partners to join Malta’s efforts to expand MedTech capabilities.
The Government of Malta hosted a panel discussion titled Innovate to Integrate: The Path to Seamless Healthcare Ecosystems on Day 1. Moderated by Stefan Buttigieg, Manager of the National Contact Point for eHealth Malta under the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, the panel featured a diverse group of experts: Edward Zammit, Senior General Practitioner and President of the Malta College of Family Doctors; Dr. Conrad Attard, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, University of Malta; Dr. Remko Schats, Founder of Enigma Global eHealth; and Inġ. Karl Farrugia, CEO of Primary Healthcare at the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing.
Day 2: Expanding Innovation Across Healthcare Sectors
Accelerating MedTech Growth Through Startups
George Gregory, CEO of Malta Enterprise, highlighted Malta’s strong foundation in pharmaceuticals and medical devices and its growing role as a hub for MedTech innovation. He announced the launch of a startup incubation center, a new SME park, and the DiHubMT to support startups with high-tech resources and European partnerships. Gregory also revealed plans for Malta’s first notified body for medical device certification, strengthening the country’s regulatory credentials. He invited global investors to explore Malta’s skilled workforce and pro-business policies to advance healthcare solutions worldwide.
Technology Transforming Elderly Care
Hon. Dr. Malcolm Paul Agius Gallia, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, explored the role of technology in improving care for the elderly. His keynote detailed initiatives such as AI-driven smart homes, wearable devices for dementia monitoring, and emergency telecommunication systems that prioritize independence and safety. “Our goal is to empower older adults to stay in their communities while ensuring they receive the care they need,” Dr. Agius Gallia explained, urging greater collaboration and investment in pilot studies for innovative care solutions.
On Day 2, Miguel Borg, CEO of Malta Venture Capital, contributed his expertise as a judge for the MedTech World Startup Pitching Competition.
