International Advanced Endoscopy Masterclass (AEM) Malta 2026 took place from 15 to 17 April 2026 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, bringing together over 400 participants from 34 countries for three days of focused learning, discussion, and hands-on training in advanced endoscopy.

Led by International AEM Directors Prof Edward J Despott and Alberto Murino, with International AEM Co-director Dr Nikolaos Lazaridis and International AEM Honorary President Hironori Yamamoto, the masterclass featured some of the leading experts in interventional endoscopy, continuing its focus on structured, step-by-step teaching.

MedTech World had the opportunity to cover the event, capturing key moments, expert insights, and the collaborative spirit that defines the global endoscopy community.

The event opened on April 15 with interactive sessions exploring emerging techniques and ongoing debates in the field, including therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), metabolic endoscopy, and colorectal procedures such as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) versus endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). The day concluded with the International AEM Advanced Endoscopy Challenge and a networking reception at Palazzo Parisio.

Day two featured a full programme of expert-led sessions, covering emergency endoscopy, cutting techniques, and evolving approaches in ESD. Industry representatives also contributed to discussions on innovation and clinical practice, followed by the AEM Endoscopy Challenge Part II and evening networking overlooking Valletta’s Grand Harbour.

The final day focused on the International AEM’s hands-on School of Endoscopy, described as the largest of its kind, with 30 simultaneous training stations across five dedicated schools, each focused on a specific endoscopic procedure or technique. Participants engaged in practical training across specialised tracks, including ESD, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and EUS, haemostasis, bariatric endoscopy and suturing, and polypectomy and EMR, combining targeted lectures with supervised hands-on experience.

Held in the historic city of Valletta, the masterclass maintained its emphasis on practical education and clinical application, continuing to serve as a recurring meeting point for the global endoscopy community.

At MedTech World Europe 2025, Prof Edward J Despott was recognised with the Pioneer in Endoscopic Innovation Award. The award honours an exceptional medical professional whose work has advanced the field of endoscopy, recognising contributions across technological innovation, procedural development, and clinical practice that support improved patient outcomes.
