Kaneka Corporation Acquires EndoStream Medical to Advance Aneurysm Treatment

Japanese company Kaneka Corporation has acquired a 96.8% stake in EndoStream Medical (ESM), an Israeli medical equipment manufacturer. This acquisition will allow the two companies to work together on new medical devices, primarily focusing on cerebrovascular treatments. One key development is the Nautilus device, which is designed to treat cerebral aneurysms. Kaneka and ESM aim to achieve sales of over 20 billion yen by 2030.

What’s Aneurysm?

An aneurysm occurs when a blood vessel weakens and forms a bulge due to pressure from blood flow. In the brain, this can lead to severe complications, including subarachnoid hemorrhage if the aneurysm ruptures. Treating aneurysms typically involves procedures to block blood flow to the weakened area, reducing the risk of rupture.

ESM has been developing the Nautilus device to treat aneurysms with wide openings in cerebral blood vessels. This type of aneurysm has been challenging to treat with existing devices. The Nautilus device has a special structure that allows it to be used with an embolisation coil, a tool designed to block blood flow and help prevent rupture.

Future Plans and Market Expansion

The Nautilus device received regulatory approval in Europe in November 2024. Plans are in place to seek approval and launch in the United States in the spring of 2026, followed by Japan in 2027.

Kaneka has a strong presence in the medical field, with products aimed at treating cardiovascular, peripheral vascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. The company already provides the i-ED COIL, an embolisation coil used to prevent damage from cerebral aneurysms. By adding the Nautilus device to its portfolio, Kaneka is expanding its offerings in cerebrovascular treatment.

The Health Care Solution Unit within Kaneka, which includes its medical businesses, aims to achieve total sales of 300 billion yen by 2030. This collaboration with ESM is expected to contribute to that goal by addressing a critical need in neurovascular treatment.
