UAE Mandates Genetic Testing for Premarital Screening This January

Starting in January 2025, Emiratis planning to marry will undergo mandatory genetic testing as part of the country’s premarital screening programme. This new initiative, announced by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), represents a major step forward in safeguarding the health of future generations and promoting long-term wellness for Emirati families. The decision, approved by the Emirates Genome Council during the UAE government’s annual meetings, is seen as a groundbreaking move in the nation’s healthcare sector.

A Shift in Healthcare Strategy

This new policy is much more than just a healthcare measure; it represents a paradigm shift in the UAE’s approach to public health. By incorporating genetic testing into the premarital screening process, the government is proactively working to prevent genetic diseases that could impact future generations. The initiative not only aims to improve individual health outcomes but also strengthens the UAE’s position as a global leader in genomic research and reproductive medicine.

The decision aligns with the UAE’s broader National Genome Strategy, which aims to create an integrated genetic database that can be used for the early identification of genetic diseases in Emiratis. By building this database, healthcare providers will be able to offer early interventions, improving the chances of better health outcomes for future generations.

Collaborative Effort Across Sectors

MoHAP emphasized that the introduction of genetic testing is a result of close collaboration among various national authorities and institutions. The programme operates under the Ministry of Health and Prevention in partnership with the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and Dubai Health, as well as academic, medical, and technological institutions.

This united approach demonstrates the country’s commitment to ensuring that the necessary expertise, medical staff, infrastructure, and guidelines are in place to successfully implement this initiative. The move also reinforces the UAE’s ongoing efforts to invest in healthcare innovation and create sustainable solutions for its citizens.

What Does the Testing Cover?

The genetic testing conducted as part of the premarital screening will examine 570 genes that are associated with over 840 medical conditions. This expansive screening will help couples understand their genetic risks, giving them the information they need to make informed decisions about their health and family planning. Some of the conditions covered include inherited blood disorders, metabolic disorders, and genetic syndromes.

By identifying potential risks before a child is born, this preventive measure ensures that couples can make choices that reduce the likelihood of passing on serious genetic conditions to their offspring. In doing so, the UAE is taking a proactive stance in healthcare, aiming to reduce the burden of genetic diseases in the population.

Long-term Impact on Healthcare and Society

MoHAP has emphasized that this initiative will drive a transformative shift in the healthcare sector, creating long-term benefits for the UAE’s citizens. By incorporating cutting-edge genetic testing into the national healthcare system, the government is not only enhancing the quality of life for families but also setting the stage for future advancements in personalized medicine. In line with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071, the decision underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable development and improving the well-being of its population through innovative healthcare solutions.
